Field Trips Foster Religious Understanding

Field trips are important shared experiences. They provide a “see for yourself” opportunity and the experience of “being there” and hearing about other beliefs.

So far Judith and participating members and friends have visited the Seventh Day Adventist Church in Longwood and Temple Israel in Winter Springs with Rabbi Neely.

At Temple Israel, we saw one of their handwritten Torah scrolls, of the first five chapters of the Bible. Verses from the Torah are read every Saturday for Shabbat, or the Sabbath. The magnificent doors behind the altar depict a stained glass window honoring the Twelve Tribes of Israel and Judah, and Hebrew characters from the first verses of Genesis. The characters symbolize the chaos before Creation, and then the order as the world came into being. [Thank you Jackie for photos of the Temple Israel visit]

On January 7 we will be visiting a Sikh temple for service and a lesson. In February a trip is planned to the Holocaust Center in Maitland. Contact Judith to register.

The Nora Staton Bookstore re-appeared with its 200+ books after being closed for the past 3 years due to COVID. Sunday’s members and friends had the opportunity to see these books, published by Skinner House and Beacon Press (publishing arms of the UUA), on a variety of topics. Ken and Carolina L. have been running this bookstore for members and friends at 1U since 1993. If you have questions, email bookstore@orlandouu.org.

Strategic Planning – Final Workshop November 5.

Strategic at the beg DSC02194

Our first two meeting were fun and full of ideas. Come to our final workshop to join the fun and the planning. This is the next step in contributing to the future of 1U.   Strategic planning isn’t always high on everyone’s list.   But in this case, just think of it as sitting down with friends over a cup of coffee to shape our future.  We come to 1U to be a part of the beloved community, for spiritual development, and social justice.  The next step in our strategic planning is to discuss with each other our future and what it takes to get there.  Please join in by attending our final workshop on

  • Sunday, November 5; 12-2pm; Assembly Room.    Child care is available.

We had very good participation in the survey – over 70 people gave us their ideas!  The survey results are here.   Your voice and ideas are needed, be a part of creating our congregation’s future.

Chalica Kits at Coffee Hour (Nov 20, Nov 27, Dec 4)

Chalica is a week-long celebration of our Unitarian Universalist Principles. The holiday first emerged in 2005 out of a wish to have a holiday organized around Unitarian Universalist values. Chalica begins on the first Monday in December and lasts seven days. Each day, a chalice is lit and the day is spent reflecting on the meaning of that day’s principle and doing a good deed that honors that principle.

Pick up a Chalica kit or a Chalica booklet to help you celebrate from Mystic Grove CUUPs at coffee hour on Nov 19, Nov 26, or Dec 3, 2022!

Donations welcome to benefit our newest church group — Parenting Fellowship group! Nobody turned away while supplies last. Email mysticgrove@orlandouu.org for more info.
